What the 999.9 (sometimes simply shown as 9999 or .9999) stands for is the millesimal fineness scale where the gold buffalo coin is guaranteed to be a minimum of 999.9/1000 pure gold. Expressed another way, the gold coin is a minimum of 99.99% gold. The American Gold Buffalo started to be produced by the US Mint in 2008 in order to provide the market with a pure gold coin that would compete with other popular gold coins such as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf or the Austrian Gold Philharmonic.
